In this area, you'll find additional legal advice, where available, on specific issues listed in the articles in the righthand column.
It is a always helpful if you can recruit someone with legal knowledge onto your management committee - or to at least know one or two members who may be able to provide you with friendly legal advice when required. If in doubt, you should approach your sports National Governing Body, or a sports development officer employed by your local Council.
Useful sources of legal reference
The following are some general sources of help that you might want to purchase or refer to:
Voluntary but not Amateur: A guide to the law for voluntary organisations and community groups by Jacki Reason, Ruth Hayes and Duncan Forbes, published by the London Voluntary Services Council (see Articles side panel for link to the publisher's website). This excellent publication is regularly updated. Although referring specifically to English Law, much of the content is of relevance to clubs and voluntary organisations throughout the country.
In the Running Sports series, there is an excellent general guide to Taxation and Sport which is very informative for treasurers (though primarily written with reference to English law).
The Department of Trade and Industry provide an extensive online reference library of employment relations advice, linked from the Resources Panel. A similar online service is provided on the ACAS website.
The Home Office also runs a very useful website called The Governance Hub which provides codes of conduct and useful guidance on all aspects of voluntary and community sector governance matters. It's linked from the Resources panel. The site refers specifically to England and Wales though many of the principles will apply elsewhere.
