Local Sports Councils and Local Authorities

Many Local Authorities have an active programme to encourage and develop sporting activities - both recreational and competitive - in their area. There is often a particular focus on developing sporting activities as part of a wider social inclusion policy.

Each Local Authority has its own departmental structure and responsibility for sports may rest variously with Recreation, Lifelong Learning, Culture or Community Development Departments. There is a link in the See Also panel to a list of the chief officers in each Council responsible for sport.

Local Sports Councils

football Within most local authority areas, the Council has established a Local Sports Council to promote and co-ordinate sports activities at club and neighbourhood level. These Local Sports Councils are usually serviced by a sports development officer or similar officer. They help local clubs to develop their facilities and activity programmes. They will often know of local coaches and training schemes, and may be able to provide practical and financial assistance with the development of local sports projects. Its a good idea to make contact with your Local Sports Council whenever you are thinking about developing your club further. There's a link in the Articles panel to find your nearest contact.
